Floating Islands

Overview
Description

Near to the village at the old quarry site, there are a number of lakes and smaller water bodies that were formed artificially when the quarry closed.

Floating Islands are vegetation to the banks of the lakes, as well as installing floating wetlands to begin to restore life to these lakes. Floating wetlands are essentially floating platforms on which we grow specialist plants that take their nutrients from the water and whose roots grow under the island to create a large surface area where microbial growth also breaks down pollutants and traps suspended material.

Need:

Due to the large quantities of chemicals and other pollutants present in the area and a complete lack of aquatic vegetation, there are no existing biological processes in place to keep the water clean.

At the moment the water seems to be completely devoid of life and is unsuitable for drinking or bathing. There is a huge amount of potential at this site for creating a wildlife habitat, cleaning the water and creating an amenity space that could host numerous recreational activities, provide a food supply and attract large numbers of birds, amphibians and insects.

The most cost effective, reliable, and sustainable way to improve the water quality is to use nature's own processes to break down the pollutants present in the water and ensure that the water stays clean and clear even after new pollutants are introduced.

The Project:

We will be introducing vegetation to the banks of the lakes, as well as installing floating wetlands to begin to restore life to these lakes. Floating wetlands are essentially floating platforms on which we grow specialist plants that take their nutrients from the water and whose roots grow under the island to create a large surface area where microbial growth also breaks down pollutants and traps suspended material.

The Impact:

As part of installing the floating wetlands we will also install floating walkways to make maintenance easier and to also provide an interesting space where villagers and trekkers alike can enjoy it as a recreational space. Once the water quality has improved and the vegetation has been established , we expect to see birds and amphibians being attracted to the area and we will introduce fish into the lake, which will become a source of income and food for the villagers.
